Discovering traffic generation strategies – leave your comment in blogcatalog.com discussion

Beginner bloggers usually face the traffic generation problem. Their more experienced colleagues often give advise them to participate in the blogcatalog.com discussions. I decided to verify efficiency of this traffic generation approach.

My workload was high this week and I couldn’t spend much time on writing good comments. Therefore I chose few discussions from thread and left 5 short comments. In result, I got 3 visits with bounce rate 100% :) Certainly it’s too early to judge, but I think my experiment was successful. Numbers show that it’s possible to attract visitors.

But how do people usually generate traffic from blogcatalog.com? Try following tactics.

  1. Ask for help. There is always someone who will help. Any problems with wordpress, or plugin, or HTML? Don’t google, create discussion.
  2. Don’t hesitate to ask stupid questions. Such discussions attract bloggers’ attention. Ask something you know and enjoy reading replies.
  3. Think win-win. Join different groups and create discussion “visit my blog, I’ll visit yours”, “write a comment, I’ll write comment”, “link me, I’ll link you”, etc.
  4. Begin platform war. What is better, wordpress or blogger?
  5. Join “spammer’s club”. Prepare list of questions and create one discussion per day. Stay online 24×7 and participate in the most popular discussions. Make sure you are always on the first page. (Find someone who will do it for you).
  6. Become a beautiful lady. Girls avatars are popular :) Click one and you’ll see many dudes in the “Recent viewers” list.

In result, I came to the conclusion that blogcatalog.com is good online resource. If you need some traffic, join it and don’t forget to ask me to visit your blog :)

Week 1 summary

What I’ve learnt so far:

Search engines

  1. Googlebot doesn’t crawl new websites frequently. One week has passed from last visit. I need more incoming links and content.
  2. Sitemap doesn’t reduce time between Googlebot visits.
  3. MSN crawler is faster than Yahoo crawler :) I have submitted my blog to MSN later than to Yahoo.
  4. Google can change index without crawling blog. Some pages are missing from index.

Social networks, bookmarking, catalogs

  1. Delicious is useless unless you build your own network. No visits.
  2. Digg can be effectively used for link building.
  3. Blogcatalog should be used by bloggers.

Other

  1. Lack of free keyword tools.
